FAQ
This page is for Frequently Asked Questions, or questions I assume will be asked.
Updated as of: 9/1/2013
- What is Project Endless?
o Project Endless is the working title for my 3D platform game project based on the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. It’s being developed on UDK, with the SonicGDK source code.
- What is SonicGDK and UDK?
o UDK (Unreal Developers Kit) is an open source software that was made by Epic Games for 3D game development, which runs on the Unreal Engine.
o SonicGDK is a source code written on UDK by a sonicretro.org member by the name of Xalse. This engine has done most of the hard work for me. I’m just creating the levels themselves.
When will the game be done?
- “When it’s done” (Don’t hit the back button just yet)
I’m a one man team and this game is done in my spare time, so I can't guarantee when or if this game will see full completion. However I intend on releasing a series of demos leading up to the beta and final versions, to test various things in the game, and also so you guys can play the game as I make it.
That being said, a demo should be out this year.
- How long will the game be?
o It’s likely going to be a game you can beat in an hour, but can replay several times with different results. It’ll feature several levels with different themes and gameplay elements, in similar fashion to your typical modern Sonic the Hedgehog title.
- Will it be like *insert game here*?
o It’s not going to really emulate any Sonic game in particular. It’s sort of my version of what I think a 3D Sonic the Hedgehog game could be like if it was given a more open world treatment. Some of my favorite Sonic titles such as Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and the Sonic Adventure series will serve as inspiration.

- Could you put *insert character here* in it?
o Right now the answer is no. Putting another character in the game would be a project in itself. Binding of isaac secret achievements.
- Will there be a hub world or story in this game?
o Right now there are no plans for this.
- Will you be changing some of the graphics/art style?
o Some assets in the game right now are default UDK assets and materials that I may replace later in development.
- Can I help with this game?
o Right now I’m not seeking help at this stage of development, but if future demos go smoothly I’ll look into expanding the scope of the project.
- “This game looks nice but I don’t know if my computer is fast enough to run it.”
o I do plan on optimizing the game for lower spec computers, but if your computer can play Unreal Tournament 3 it should be up to playing this. Exact recommended specs will be released later.
- How much will it cost?
o Nothing at all. And I won’t accept donations either. It would be unethical and I’m pretty sure it’s illegal too. I ain’t in this for the money, but maybe the rings.
- Will there be a Mac or console version?
o Right now there’s only going to be a PC (Windows) version. A console version can’t exist for legal reasons. A Mac version MIGHT happen much later when development is wrapping up.
- Will my controller work with it?
o Yes. Any USB controller should work.
- This game looks similar to another game I’ve seen such as ‘Sonic Exodus’ or ‘Green Hill Paradise’.
o That’s because they were made in the same engine, so my game will be using similar assets. If you haven’t, you should check out those games too.
- Will *insert thing here* be in the game? Or is *insert thing here* done?
o Check my developer’s notes, the answer might be there. I’ll try to keep it updated as best I can.
o And keep in mind, if it looks bad, it’s probably not done.
That’s about it for the FAQ. I will update this as I get more questions. If you have one yourself, email [email protected], or visit one of these forum threads:
SonicGDK (short for 3D Sonic Games Development Kit) is an impressive Unreal Development Kit powered Sonic The Hedgehog game creation tool which allows users to create some seriously impressive Sonic games (much better than the tat SEGA have been making lately anyway!)
SonicGDK gives you access to 3 versions of Sonic (Classic, Generic & Modern) with super forms, power-ups, badniks, special moves, controller support, checkpoints, bumpers, spikes and various other traps – basically everything you need to make a Sonic game.
IMPORTANT NOTES FOR INSTALLING SonicGDK:
1. Download the latest version of SonicGDK HERE

2. Visit www.unrealengine.com/udk and download the “JULY 2013 UDK BETA” release.
3. Execute the downloaded .exe file and follow the instructions (choose UT3-derived game project, ignore Perforce options).
4. After the installation process, close the UDK Editor if it’s opened.
5. Copy the SonicGDK’s folders Development and UDKGame and the .bat files to the UDK directory.
6. Run the Unreal Frontend tool (BinariesUnrealFrontend.exe), click on the “Script” button and choose the “Full recompile” option from the list.
7. Close the Unreal Frontend tool; installation is complete.
8. Run the game or the editor through the .bat files. The first time that you open the test map, it will compile all the material shaders and take a really long time.
